New Encyclical Is Out

ENCYCLICAL LETTER

SPE SALVI

OF THE SUPREME PONTIFF

BENEDICT XVI

TO THE BISHOPS
PRIESTS AND DEACONS
MEN AND WOMEN RELIGIOUS
AND ALL THE LAY FAITHFUL

ON CHRISTIAN HOPE

(full text)

From the introduction...

SPE SALVI facti sumus”—in hope we were saved, says Saint Paul to the Romans, and likewise to us (Rom 8:24). According to the Christian faith, “redemption”—salvation—is not simply a given. Redemption is offered to us in the sense that we have been given hope, trustworthy hope, by virtue of which we can face our present: the present, even if it is arduous, can be lived and accepted if it leads towards a goal, if we can be sure of this goal, and if this goal is great enough to justify the effort of the journey.

I haven't been able to pore over the encyclical as I'd like to just yet (I think that will happen over Christmas!).

I do think it's quite inspiring how the Holy Father addresses pressing contemporary issues--especially social and political issues--from such a, well, hopeful point of view. People thought they were going to get a pessimistic, tough, hard-hitting first encyclical from the 'German Shepherd' or 'B-16 Bomber' back in 2005, but he came out with a beautiful meditation on love. Still tough and hard-hitting, as our beloved pope can't avoid, but not at all pessimistic. And here we are with HOPE.

Time magazine online actually had a good article about the new encyclical. Check it out here: http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1689987,00.html
