Avery Cardinal Dulles 1918 - 2008

Cardinal Dulles died this morning at Fordham, where he was the Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society. He was an adult convert to Catholicism, becoming a Jesuit. His father John Foster Dulles was Secretary of State and namesake of Washington DC's international airport. His uncle was Allen Dulles, director of the CIA. Avery was a Navy lieutenant during World War II. In Fall 1985 he was the John A. O'Brien Visiting Professor of Theology at Notre Dame. He received an honorary doctorate from Notre Dame in 2001.
