Notre Dame Students Respond to Obama Invite, Honor

On 20 March 2009, Notre Dame announced that President Barack H. Obama will deliver the principal address at the 2009 commencement ceremonies as well as receive an honorary doctor of laws degree from the University's Law School.

While there have been many University community members voicing their excitement or approval of the University's choice of speaker, there also are individual students, student groups, and faculty who are displeased and disappointed by the announcement.

On 25 March 2009, a coalition of 10 University student groups released a public statement denouncing the University's' decision to invite and honor Mr. Obama.

The group has been fast at work organizing respectful, prayerful, and educative responses to the announcement. The students' intention is to defend the University's mission and identity as a Catholic institution of higher learning, as well as call the University administration to task on implementing more pro-life initiatives from the administrative level. Particularly, the coalition is calling for the University to rescind the intention to honor Mr. Obama with the honorary doctor of laws degree.

The Notre Dame Response Student Coalition intends to host a timeline of events between now and 17 May 2009, Commencement Day.

God Bless you for your prayerful efforts for Notre Dame University, as well as, for the unborn! I am deeply saddened for Notre Dame. I heard that many students are thinking of boycotting their own graduation. I hope that rather than skipping their commencement, for which they have worked so hard, the pro-life students of Notre Dame will take this opportunity to respectfully protest in another manner. My idea would be to organize graduates, parents, pro-life faculty and visitors to carry a rosary and a black veil to the commencement exercises. As Obama is announced, every PRO-LIFE

As Obama is introduced, every PRO-LIFE advocate (parents, students, faculty, etc,) should veil their faces, kneel, take out their rosary and begin to pray as Obama speaks. Can you imagine the impact? The silent prayers for the unborn, the masses quietly and respectfully praying, the media coverage? Maybe this is your opportunity to be heard! God Bless you.

The Holy Name of Jesus, IHS, was covered up at Georgetown for Obama's speech. During the graduation ceremonies, I implore all graduates, alumni and friends to proclaim the Holy Name of Jesus. Please chant this. Please wear the IHS symbol on your gowns. Carry IHS banners, statues of the Lord and of Our Blessed Mother to graduation!
